Origin and history

The so-called "de Bernardot" was erected in 1867 in the commune of Bourogne, according to the plans of the Belgian architect Diogene Poisat. Located west of the village, near the remains of the ancient feudal castle, it is part of a policy of communal hydraulics, supplementing two covered washhouses built in 1847. Its architecture combines practicality and aesthetics: a fountain with a semicircular basin, fed by an octagonal column, and open basins organized in U for washing, rinsing and watering functions.

The building, fully paved, incorporates metal turnstiles still visible today. Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 21 July 2010, it illustrates the importance of water-related public facilities in 19th century villages. Its protection includes paving and metal elements, highlighting its historical and technical heritage value. A communal property, the wash-house also bears witness to the social role of wash-houses, places of meeting and work for lavender-makers.

The location of the washyard, rue du Bernardot, is documented in the Merimée database under the code Insee 90017, attached to the Territory of Belfort. Although the available GPS coordinates suggest an approximate address to Joncherey, official sources (Monumentum) confirm its anchoring in Bourogne. However, cartographic accuracy remains limited (level 5/10), reflecting the challenges of geolocation of rural monuments.
