Origin and history

The Roman camp of Liercourt-Érondelle, located in the department of the Somme in the Hauts-de-France region, is an archaeological vestige dating from the protohistoric and ancient periods. This site, classified as Historical Monument since 1862, illustrates the strategic importance of the region, marked by successive occupations since the Prehistory. The Somme, crossed by the eponymous river, was a coveted territory for its position between Paris and Flanders, as evidenced by the numerous archaeological remains discovered in the valley.

The region, rich in prehistoric and ancient heritage, has been the subject of extensive archaeological studies, notably thanks to the work of pioneers such as Jacques Boucher de Perthes. The Liercourt-Érondelle camp is part of this military and civilian occupation, reflecting the dynamics of settlement and defence during antiquity. Excavations and research in the Somme revealed traces of habitats, tools and defensive structures, confirming the importance of this territory in regional history.

The department of the Somme, formerly integrated with Picardia, is today a key place to understand the transitions between Protohistory and Roman times. The Liercourt camp, by its early location and ranking, is a significant example of the military installations of that time. His study helps inform the ways of life, construction techniques and territorial control strategies implemented by the Romans in northern France.
