Origin and history
Limoges Municipal Hospital, located in the town of Limoges in New Aquitaine, was built in the second half of the 18th century, near the site of the former Saint-Gérald Hospice. Founded in 1660 under the impulse of Maleden de Savignac, it underwent extensive restorations in 1775, when the current main house body was erected. Its facade, remarkable by its classical architecture, is marked by a full-cindered portal, windows decorated with frontons, and a cartridge surmounted by a cross, reflecting its original religious and charitable use.
The façade of the hospital was listed as historic monuments by decree of 5 May 1947, recognizing its heritage value. In 1974, the hospital ceased its medical activities, replaced by the new hospital Dupuytren, and part of the building was reconverted to accommodate the Limoges Francophone Multimedia Library. This site thus illustrates the evolution of urban uses, moving from a place of care to a cultural space, while preserving its architectural heritage.
The building is distinguished by a symmetrical three-storey composition, where the central pattern highlights the entrance. The ground floor features a gate framed with mouldings, while the upper floors alternate triangular front and sculpted cornice windows. Two pilasters supporting a garland and a circular pediment crown the whole, highlighting its monumental character. The foothills in volutes connect this central part to the rest of the facade, creating a harmony between decoration and structure.
Today, the former hospital, located 25 rue de l'Hôpital (or 4 rue Louis Longequeue according to the sources), remains a testimony of the hospital history limougeaude. Although its exact location is estimated as "passable" (note 5/10), it retains a place in the local heritage, between medical memory and contemporary vocation. Public property, it is not specified whether it is open to visit, but its inscription in historical monuments guarantees its preservation.
