Origin and history

The Accomodations d'Électricité de France, located 42 boulevard du Colonel-Fabien in Ivry-sur-Seine, was designed in the 1960s by architect Pierre Riboulet and the Atelier de Montrouge. These two residential towers, connected by garages, illustrate an innovative approach to collective housing: each apartment occupies an entire floor, with a rotating plane of a quarter of a turn at each level. This rotation principle, allowed by a reinforced concrete frame, creates visual diversity while maintaining a structural unit.

In 1963, Électricité de France (EDF) ordered these houses to house the frames of the Ivry-Port thermal power plant. Initially planned as twelve pavilions, the project is moving towards two towers completed in 1967. These buildings, now referred to as the "Atelier Terraces", embody the reflection of the Montrouge Workshop on collective housing, combining functionality and aesthetics. Their bold architecture, with identical apartments but oriented differently, marks a break with traditional models.

Classified as an additional inventory of historic monuments since 2003, EDF Housing was renovated in 2015 as part of the Ivry Confluences programme. The facades, roofs, garages and fences are protected, highlighting their heritage value. Their design, based on a central core serving rotating housing, remains an emblematic example of modern French architecture, combining technical innovation and meeting the social needs of the time.
