Renaissance gate of the old gate: inscription by decree of 15 September 1954

Origin and history

The Logis de l'Abbé d'Ainay is a monument located in the city of Lyon, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This building is known for its Renaissance portal, whose door has been protected under the Historic Monuments since 1954. The official address recorded in the Mérimée base is 15 rue Vaubécour, in the 1st arrondissement, although GPS coordinates suggest a nearby location, at 13 rue Vaubecour, in the 2nd arrondissement.

This shift illustrates the uncertainties associated with its precise location, assessed as poor (note 5/10) by contributors. This house is associated with the religious history of Lyon, in connection with the Abbey of Ainay, one of the oldest in the city, founded in the 9th century. Although the details of its construction and its initial use are absent from the source text, its name suggests that it served as a residence for the abbot or ecclesiastical dignitaries.

Today, the building belongs to an association, but its access to the public (visits, rentals, accommodation) is not specified. The protection of its Renaissance gate, a remarkable architectural element, bears witness to its heritage importance in a neighbourhood marked by medieval and reborn history of Lyon.
