Origin and history

The house of the Cornelière is a castle located in Mervent, in the Vendée department, in the Pays de la Loire region. Built in the first half of the 17th century, it represents a typical example of seigneurial architecture of that time. The building is organized in a closed courtyard, characteristic of the houses of this period, and was listed as historical monuments in 1996 for its facades and roofs, including those of the wings in return of the communes.

In 1616, the house belonged to Jean Bodin, squire, who was probably at the origin of its construction. This small seigneury illustrates the way of life of the local nobles at the beginning of the seventeenth century, a period marked by relative stability after the wars of Religion. The house, although modest compared to the large castles of the Loire, bears witness to the importance of seigneurial residences in the social and economic organization of the region.

Today, the home of the Cornelière remains a protected architectural heritage, reflecting local history and the evolution of noble constructions in Vendée. Its designation as a historic monument in 1996 underscores its heritage value and its role in the cultural heritage of the region. The information available does not specify whether the site is open to visitors or whether it offers services such as guest rooms.
