Origin and history
The house of the Gautronnière, located in Aubigny-Les Clouzeaux, is a seigneurial residence built around 1550-1560, characteristic of the houses of the Vendeans of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. This historic monument, classified in 1995, illustrates Renaissance civil architecture in the region, with monumental chimneys decorated with carved leather cartridges and painted beams. It was associated with a farm, reflecting the way of life of the rural elites of the time.
The site includes several protected elements: the main house, the buildings around the courtyard, an old chapel, a lower courtyard with its walls and well, as well as enclosed gardens. A feudal motte and its ditches, archaeological remains, testify to an earlier occupation of the site. These characteristics make it a representative example of the seigneurial vendeans, mixing noble habitat, agricultural activities and medieval heritage.
The location of the house, in the department of Vendée (Pays de la Loire), is part of a territory marked by a strong presence of rural houses and manor houses, often linked to the exploitation of land. These houses played a central role in the local social and economic organization, serving both as a residence for seigneurial families and as a management centre for the surrounding agricultural estates.
