Origin and history
The Logis de la Mothe-Orson is a historical monument located in Moutiers-sur-le-Lay, in the Vendée department (85), in the Pays de la Loire region. Originally built in 1567, it illustrates the residential architecture of the late Renaissance, with features unique to the seigneurial houses of the time. Its location in a territory then marked by the wars of Religion and agricultural transformations makes it a witness to the social and economic developments of the region.
At the beginning of the 17th century, around the 1630s, the house underwent significant expansions, perhaps reflecting the social rise of its owners or an adaptation to the new standards of comfort of the classical era. These architectural changes are part of a regional context where local elites, often linked to the nobility or the Earth bourgeoisie, invest in the modernization of their residences. The house, with its adjoining buildings, forms a coherent whole, protected by an inscription to the Historic Monuments in 1996 for its heritage interest.
The location of the house in La Motte Orson in the commune of Moutiers-sur-le-Lay suggests an anchoring in a rural territory, where this type of dwelling often played a central role in economic and social organization. The seigneurial houses were then used as places of residence, but also as administrative centres for the surrounding lands. Their preservation today offers an overview of the lifestyles and social hierarchies of the 16th and 17th centuries in Vendée.
Available sources, including Monumentum and Merimée data, confirm its status as a protected monument, without specifying the identity of the owners or architects involved in its construction. The exact address, 139 La Motte Orson, and its Insee code (85157) allow to situate it precisely in the Vendean landscape, between La Roche-sur-Yon and coastal areas, an area marked by its rural history and its past religious conflicts.
