Origin and history

The Logis du Bois is a monument located in Grazay, in the department of Mayenne (region Pays de la Loire). Attested since the 15th century, it preserves remains of a 14th century defensive system, although its moats were filled in the 18th century. This site illustrates the architectural evolution between the Middle Ages and the modern era, with medieval defensive elements partially preserved despite their subsequent transformation.

In the mid-19th century, the house was completed by outbuildings characteristic of the aristocratic residences of the time: a kennel, an orangery, and commons. These additions reflect the taste of the era for practical and aesthetic arrangements, typical of well-off rural properties. The estate, including the house, the communes, and the gardens, has been protected as historic monuments since March 28, 1995, recognizing its heritage value.

The location of Grazay, in Mayenne, places this home in a historical context marked by ancient occupation and diverse rural architecture. Medieval defensive systems, like those partially preserved here, bear witness to the local strategic stakes during the 14th and 15th centuries. The inscription of the site in 1995 underlines its importance for the understanding of the Ligerian built heritage, between medieval heritage and modern transformations.
