Origin and history

The house of Plessis-Roland is a historical monument located in Precigné, on the borders of Anjou and Maine, in the current Sarthe department. Built in the late 15th century, it probably replaces an older building. The current house, distributed by a screw staircase in a semi-engaged tower, rests on a platform surrounded by moat including a castral mot. Its defensive features, such as fire-mouthed turrets, and its decorative elements, such as skylight chimneys, bear witness to the work carried out from the 16th to the 18th century.

The site also includes a defensive structure, a motte, a network of moat with bridges, and communal buildings. A dovecote covered with a conical roof, dated around 1710, as well as agricultural parts prior to 1828 complete the whole. The house underwent major changes in the 18th century, including structural changes, the addition of a corridor, sculptures, and a body after the 19th century. The ensemble has been listed as historical monuments since 29 July 2008.

The body of passage, built in the eighteenth century, was destroyed in 1937. The protected elements include the entire house, the large tower, the moat, the moth, the archaeological basement, and the facades and roofs of the communes. The site is located in 2001 Place Dit Le Plessis Roland, in the municipality of Précigné, identified by code Insee 72244.
