Origin and history
The Logis de l'Hôpiteau, located in Bords in Charente-Maritime (New Aquitaine), is an iconic 19th-century monument built in a neo-classical style. It is surrounded by a park designed to offer a visual perspective, starting to the north with an oak alley and extending south through a treed hole. This estate illustrates bourgeois residential architecture of the period, combining landscape aesthetics and classical elegance.
The buildings and the housing park were listed in the Historical Monuments Inventory by order of 8 February 2005, thereby recognizing their heritage value. This protection covers the entire area, including interior decorations, as evidenced by the Merimée base. The registered official address is 12 Rue du Château à Bords, in the department of Charente-Maritime (code Insee 17053).
One of the most remarkable elements of the house is its greyish decoration dated 1833, located in the dining room. This panoramic wallpaper, entitled "La vallée du Rhône des Alpes à Marseille", represents an alpine landscape with a torrent and hunting scenes, ending on a commercial port. Composed of 23 square lees (not in rolls), it is 12 meters long for 2.20 meters high. Considered exceptional for its rarity, it was completely restored in the workshop in 2015, allowing also to treat the underlying walls. This decor was an integral part of the original layout of the castle.
No information is available on historic owners, architects or artisans who have contributed to its construction or decorations. The sources consulted (Wikipédia, Monumentum) also do not mention any significant anecdotes or events related to this house, apart from its protection under the Historical Monuments and the restoration of its wallpaper. The GPS location of the site is considered "passable" (note 5/10) according to Monumentum, and a Street View view is available for virtual exploration.
