Origin and history
The seigneurial house of Gajan is a medieval castle located in the Gard department in the Occitan region. Built between the 12th and 15th centuries, it bears witness to the defensive and residential architecture of this period. The site was occupied by a circular castrum in the year 1000, but it was at the beginning of the 13th century that the bishop of Uzès erected a house there in front of this first fortification. In 1226, the ensemble went under royal control.
The original structure consists of a one-storey house and a two-storey dungeon tower, housing a dovecote. These elements, designed independently, are modified in the 14th–15th centuries: the house is raised, crenelated and equipped with a defensive suspender. The tower, partially preserved in its original state (XIIth–XIIIth centuries), is opened to the east by bays and a half-cross. The crenelage, added late, has now disappeared.
The monument has been included in the inventory of historical monuments since 30 April 2008, thus protecting the entire house (cadastre B 1135). Its exact location is 6 Rue du Porche in Gajan, although the cartographic accuracy is considered mediocre (level 5/10). The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) highlight its importance as an example of architectural evolution between the Middle Ages and the late Middle Ages.
