The dovecote in full (Box B 726): inscription by order of 4 October 2010
Origin and history
The seigneurial house of Saint-Martin-le-Mault, located in the eponymous commune of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is an architectural complex of the 15th and 16th centuries. It consists of a main house, a stair tower, and outbuildings, including a circular granite dovecote, typical of the seigneurial buildings of the time. This dovecote, attested as early as 1473, is distinguished by its cylindrical shape and its isolation from other buildings, characteristic of the dovecotes "in the countryside". Its structure, little modified over the centuries, preserves original elements such as a slat, two access bays, and 328 bolts arranged diagonally inside.
The dovecote, with a diameter of 4 meters and a height of 7.2 meters, is covered with flat tiles and has a central stone bearing an ancient gallows. Although the house was remodelled, the dovecote was preserved in its original state, offering a rare example of this type of building in New Aquitaine. Ranked Historic Monument by order of 4 October 2010, it now belongs to a private company. Its architecture and history reflect the role of the dovecotes in the medieval and renaissant seigneuries, where they symbolized both a seigneurial privilege and an economic resource.
The location of the site, in Saint-Martin-le-Mault (Haute-Vienne), in a rural setting, highlights its isolation from other buildings, reinforcing its emblematic character. Historical documents mention its membership in a small group of buildings forming the former seat of a seigneury, although details of its occupants or its precise use beyond colombophilia remain unknown. The protection of the dovecote in 2010 helped to safeguard this heritage, while leaving open questions about its current accessibility to the public or its contemporary vocation.
