Origin and history

Foch Square, originally called Place Ronde, was built in 1755 in Jouars-Pontchartrain, Yvelines. Its creation coincides with a deviation from national road 12, marking the introduction of an urban form into a rural environment. It adjoins the old deer park of Pontchartrain Castle, where it retains a visual escape thanks to a leap-of-loup (or haha), a landscaped element typical of 18th century gardens.

The architectural complex of the square, including its facades and roofs, reflects proactive urban planning. The buildings bordering the square (notably on the 2 routes of Pontel, 1 rue Mazières, and 1 route de Paris) and the jump-off were protected by a registration order in 2002. This monument illustrates the transition between rural space and emerging urbanization under the Old Regime, while at the same time demonstrating the influence of seigneurial domains on spatial planning.

The square, a mixed property (state, commune, private), preserves uncadastered soil and emblematic public elements. Its route and its surroundings, such as Rue Sainte-Anne or Rue Saint-Frédéric, recall its historic role as a crossroads between Paris and Normandy, via National Route 12. The accuracy of its current location is considered fair (note 5/10), according to the Merimée data.
