Origin and history

The agricultural high school in Cantarel, known as the François Petrarque High School, is a public educational, technological and agricultural institution located in Avignon, Vaucluse. Founded in honour of the 14th century Italian poet, he is part of the Aix-Marseille Academy and benefits from the Campus label of trades and qualifications in the fields of agroscience and agri-food. Its architecture, designed between 1966 and 1969, reflects modernist principles, with a mill wing plan organized around a core dedicated to general services.

Architects Roland Bechmann, Pierre Biscop, Charles André and François Girard have incorporated characteristic elements of Le Corbusier's style, such as roof terraces, stilts, protruding stairs, sunbreakers and the use of raw concrete. These choices recall in particular the convent of Sainte-Marie de La Tourette, a major work by the Franco-Swiss architect. The high school, registered to historical monuments since 16 November 1989, also carried the 20th label (now outstanding contemporary architecture) until 2017.

The site, located in the district of Montfavet in Avignon, illustrates the evolution of educational infrastructures in France during the Thirty Glories. Its heritage inscription highlights the recognition of modernist school architecture as a witness to the social and educational changes of the post-war period. The courses offered cover areas related to agriculture, technology and science, in line with regional economic challenges.
