Origin and history

The Lycée Lapérouse of Albi, originally a Jesuit college, was founded in 1623 on land ceded by the consuls of the city, near the old ramparts (Lices). The chapel, built between 1630 and 1638, is the only vestige of this period. It was disused during the Revolution (1792–30), transformed into a theatre in 1794, and returned to worship in 1830. The sailors Henri-Pascal de Rochegude and Jean-François de Lapérouse, former students, illustrate his prestige in the 18th century.

The Revolution converted the college into a Central School (1796), then the Second Empire made it an Imperial Lycée in 1862. The current buildings date mostly from this time, inaugurated in 1867 by Victor Duruy, minister of Napoleon III. Jean Jaurès taught philosophy there (1881–83), while Georges Pompidou, future president, studied there (1918–1928). The chapel, classified as a historic monument in 1957, was renovated in the 1990s to house an auditorium and a CDI.

Today, Laperouse High School offers general education, scientific CPGE (PC/PSI), and a unique music option in Tarn. Its history combines architectural heritage, local elite education (Pierre Mondy, Paul Guth) and Jesuit memory. The establishment remains a symbol of Albi's educational and cultural heritage, between tradition and modernity.
