Origin and history

Gambetta High School in Cahors was founded in 1604 in the Jesuit College on the site of the former Saint Michael College (XIVth century). The current buildings, built of stone and brick, date mostly from the 4th quarter of the 17th century, with a 34-metre tower erected in 1676 by architect Antoine Chassagnard. The chapel, richly decorated with murals (Christ in majesty, cardinal virtues), and the hall of declamation testify to its educational and religious heritage. The college was closed in 1762 after the expulsion of the Jesuits, then transformed into the Central Lot School in 1796 before becoming a high school in 1803, thanks to the financial intervention of Joachim Murat (60,000 francs).

Between 1803 and 1974, the establishment knew several names: lycée Impérial (1804–14, 1853–888), Collège Royal (1815–53), then lycée Gambetta from 1888, in homage to Léon Gambetta, native of Cahors. The tower was listed as a Historic Monument in 1891, followed by the chapel and the declamation hall in 2016. The 19th century reconstructions, led by architect Rodolosse, partially modernized the site, while preserving historical elements such as the central suspended staircase.

The history of the high school reflects the political and educational upheavals in France: the transition from a religious college to a secular school, late mixedness (1974), and adaptation to school reforms. The tower, a brick regional architectural symbol, and the wall paintings of the chapel (near side) illustrate the mixture of Jesuit and classical influences. Today, the site, owned by the commune, retains a strong heritage value, linked to its role in cadurcian education for more than four centuries.
