Origin and history
The Arsenal de Rochefort food store, built in the second half of the 17th century, is one of the first buildings in the arsenal. Built according to the plans of architect François Le Vau, it was started in 1671 and completed in 1677 with the addition of two entrance pavilions. Its U-shaped plan, completed in 1680 by a symmetrical marine hospital, reflects a functional organization: cellars for 400 barrels of wine, salisons, bakery with 17 original ovens, and floors dedicated to shops and attices.
In 1919, a fire seriously damaged the south wing and its south-east flag, resulting in the partial loss of their attic. The building, registered as a historical monument in 2007, illustrates the military utility architecture of the time. His spaces also included a cooperage and cereal and biscuits compartments, demonstrating his central logistical role for the Royal Navy.
Located at 16 Quai aux Vivres, the food store is now owned by the commune of Rochefort. Its inscription covers all the buildings and the ground of the plot, highlighting its heritage importance. Available sources, such as the Mérimée and Monumentum base, confirm its status as an emblematic monument to local military and architectural history.
