Origin and history

The town hall of the 15th arrondissement of Paris, located 31 rue Péclet, replaces the former town hall of Grenelle acquired in 1842 place du Commerce. The current building was designed by the architect Désiré Louis Henri Devrez between 1873 and 1876, initially limited to its central part. This sober project, rewarded with a gold medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1878, was then enriched with two wings and a campanile.

In 1913, the architect Léon Jaussely undertook a major expansion, including the elevation of the left wing and the reconstruction of the right wing. Today it houses the festive hall, decorated in an Art Deco style by Henri Rapin (Allegorical paintings of the Four Seasons, stuccos) and Victor Guillonnet (central ceiling). Inaugurated in 1929, this room, classified as a 20th century heritage, was listed as a historical monument in 2011 for its decoration and facades.

The wedding hall, decorated with allegorical motifs by Ferdinand Humbert and Pierre Lagarde (1886), as well as the hall of the city council — the largest in Paris, restored in 1990 — testify to the architectural and artistic evolution of the building. In front of the facade, a bronze statue by Antoine Bourdelle pays tribute to the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, adding a heritage dimension to the ensemble.

The building thus illustrates the urban and administrative transformations of Paris, combining the 19th century heritage (initial structure) and innovations of the 1920s (art Deco decorations). Its partial inscription in historical monuments underscores the value of its festive hall, a symbol of republican festivals and civil ceremonies in the 15th arrondissement.
