Origin and history

This 16th century house, located 13 Place Jean-Jaurès in Châteldon, illustrates the civil architecture of the time when the commune, then capital of Barony, flourished thanks to tanneries and cutlery. It is distinguished by its blind north facade, marked by a stairwell in protruding, and its south and west facades with wooden panels, typical of late medieval buildings. A curved beam separates the ground floor, dedicated to shops, upper floors, renovated in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The house housed two shops: one opening on Jean-Jaurès Square, the other on Rue des Boucheries, reflecting its central commercial role. The ground floor basket handle bay, with ground frames, and the gallery on elevation (formerly 18th century) underline its importance in the urban fabric. Since 1926, according to an oral source, the shop on the square has hosted a pharmacy. Ranked a Historical Monument in 1959 for its facades and roofs, it embodies the artisanal and architectural heritage of Châteldon.

The interior redevelopments of the 18th and 19th centuries, although after its construction, testify to its adaptation to changing needs, while preserving medieval elements such as the apparent structure. Its inscription in the title of Historic Monuments in 1959 (decree of 12 March) protects these characteristics, highlighting its heritage value in the fortified village of Châteldon, linked to local industrial history.
