Origin and history
The house at 4 Rue de la Liberté in Sarlat-la-Canéda is a typical example of 15th century Gothic civil architecture. This building is distinguished by its large gable on street, its wooden panels (menals), and a facade decorated with trilobed windows. Two other windows preserve remains of columnettes and clover motifs, characteristic of the late Gothic style. These decorative elements, although partly eroded by time, illustrate the know-how of the artisans of the time and the probably easy social status of its first occupants.
Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 23 August 1946, this house embodies the medieval heritage of Sarlat, a city known for its preserved historical centre. The protection concerns specifically the structure of the 15th century, identified under cadastre H 798. Its inscription reflects the importance attached to the conservation of Gothic civil buildings, less frequent than religious buildings of the same period. The location, in the heart of Sarlat, suggests a role in medieval urban life, possibly linked to commerce or craftsmanship, dominant activities in the prosperous cities of the Black Perigord.
The accuracy of its current location is considered "passable" (note 5/10), indicating that its exact location could benefit from further verification. Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum base, confirm its address at 4 rue de la Liberté, in the Dordogne department (New Aquitaine region). No information is provided on its access to the public, whether it be visits, rentals or accommodation, suggesting a mainly residential or private vocation since its registration.
