Facades and roofs (Box BI 267): inscription by order of 14 January 1977

Origin and history

The house at 7 Rue Montaigne in Sarlat-la-Canéda is a 16th and 17th century building, typical of the civil architecture of this period. Its access is via a staircase leading to a terrace, on which the house opens. A dovecote, partly built of wood and cut stone, closes this terrace. The walls, in stone and stone, reflect local construction techniques.

This monument was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 14 January 1977, for its facades and roofs. The accuracy of its location is considered poor (note 5/10), but its official address is confirmed in the Merimée database. The house illustrates the evolution of bourgeois or rural homes affluent in Périgord, where pigeons were markers of social status.

Sarlat-la-Canéda, located in Dordogne (Nouvelle-Aquitaine), was at that time a dynamic economic and administrative centre, marked by trade, crafts and a strong social hierarchy. Houses like this often served as residences for local merchants, notables or officers. Their architecture blending wood and stone bears witness to the resources available and the know-how of the artisans of the time.
