Façade including door and balcony: inscription by order of 28 October 1949

Origin and history

The house with cariatides of the rue des Marins, located in Carpentras in the Vaucluse, is a mansion built in the seventeenth century. Its architecture bears witness to a wealth of past, with refined sculpted decorations, notably on the gate and a wall ceiling decorated with golden gypsum and paintings. The building, of irregular plan, is organized around a partially covered inner courtyard, today surmounted by a terrace.

The entrance gate, framed by two atlanteans supporting a cornice and a balcony, is a significant element of the north facade. Inside, a hanging round staircase, probably built on an anterior medieval structure, serves the floors. The monument underwent changes in the 18th and 19th centuries, including changes to the façade, interior decorations and stairs. A fountain, originally located on the ground floor, was restored and moved to the terrace covering the courtyard.

Classified as historical monuments by order of 28 October 1949, the house is distinguished by its facade, portal and balcony, protected for their heritage value. Remnants of arches in the courtyard, like a large classical arch in walled cock-and-pane, suggest successive transformations of space. Today, the hotel retains traces of its aristocratic past, despite recent developments such as rustic coating applied on the facade.

The building illustrates the architectural evolution of private hotels in Provence, combining classical influences and practical adaptations. Its history also reflects the urban dynamics of Carpentras, a city marked by preserved heritage and contemporary reuse of its historic spaces. The house with cariatides remains a testimony of local craftsmanship, from sculpture to ironwork.
