Origin and history

The house located at 73 rue Jean-Jacques-Rousseau in Chinon is a woody house characteristic of the 15th century. Its ground floor, modernized in stone, contrasts with the two upper floors of wood, where the hurdles were replaced by brickwork. The facades and the roof, covered with slates, have been listed as historical monuments since 1962. The decoration of the first floor, supported by wooden and stone consoles, as well as the diamond patterns of the wooden panels, illustrate the architectural know-how of the period.

This corner house, paired with number 75, is located in the Saint-Étienne district, a commercial area in the Middle Ages. Rue Jean-Jacques-Rousseau, an extension of the great medieval artery of Chinon, housed shops on the ground floor, as evidenced by the preserved amenities. The proximity of another wood-paned house, also classified, reinforces the heritage importance of this historic crossroads.

The house was built between the 15th and 16th centuries, although its main period remained the 15th century. Its inscription as a historic monument in 1962 allowed to preserve its remarkable elements, such as the mouldings of wooden stands and ties. Today, it hosts an art gallery, thus perpetuating its cultural function in the historic heart of Chinon.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its role in the medieval urban landscape. The stone base of the side façade and the diamond wood panel structure are major architectural features. Its exact address, 73 rue Jean-Jacques-Rousseau (and 23 rue Marceau), is referenced in the Mérimée base under the code Insee 37072, confirming its anchoring in the department of Indre-et-Loire.
