Monumental gate on street (cad. L 288): inscription by decree of 22 July 1927

Origin and history

The house in Laon, in the department of Aisne, is a 17th century building. It is representative of the civil architecture of this period, marked by decorative elements and a structure adapted to the urban needs of the period. Although little detail is available on its specific history, its inscription as Historic Monuments in 1927 highlights its heritage interest, particularly for its monumental gate on street, the only protected element to date.

In the 17th century, Laon was an active city, integrated into an important economic and religious network in Picardy (now Hauts-de-France). The bourgeois or artisanal houses of that time often reflected the social status of their owners, while responding to urban constraints. This type of building was involved in the structuring of streets and neighbourhoods, playing a role in daily life and local identity.

The preservation of the monumental gate of this house bears witness to the attention paid to certain architectural details, characteristic of the buildings of the Old Regime.
