Origin and history
The Maison Alaux, located in Carcassonne in the Occitanie region, is a historical monument dating from the first half of the seventeenth century. Its construction is estimated between 1647 and 1668, a period marked by local tax and cadastral variation. The main entrance, a rectangular door, leads to an inner courtyard accessible by a covered passage supported by beams. The eastern and northern facades of the courtyard retain original architectural elements, testifying to its history.
The eastern façade of the Maison Alaux features three large arches, two of which frame the stairwell. These arches, in full hanger or crawling, rest on square pillars with ground impostes (net, heel, listel). The arch in a basket handle illuminating the stairwell is a notable feature, coupled with a parallel arc supporting the landing on the first floor. These architectural details reflect the construction techniques of the time in Languedoc.
Classified as a Historic Monument, the Maison Allaux has seen its courtyard, staircase and a door window protected by order of 10 April 1948. The preserved elements, such as the arches and the structure of the stairwell, offer an overview of the bourgeois houses of Carcassonne in the 17th century. The official address (14 Victor-Hugo Street) and approximate GPS coordinates (38 Albert Tomey Street) highlight its anchoring in the historic centre of the city.
