Origin and history
The house of 11 Victor-Hugo square in Cusset, dated the 15th century, is a contemporary civil building of the so-called Louis XI house, with which it forms a coherent architectural ensemble. Its gable, oriented towards the square, reveals an apparent structure resting on four ground crows, while its façade, although remodeled, retains windows with the same frames as those of the neighbouring house, composed of a boudin falling on ground bases. A lintel door in braid, surmounted by a turret in corbellation, marks access through Blaise-Jallet Street (formerly North Street).
Partially classified as historical monuments by decree of 5 November 1928, this house illustrates bourgeois architecture of the late Middle Ages in Bourbonnais. The protected elements include its three facades (on Victor-Hugo Square, the Boulevard de l'Hôtel-de-Ville and the Rue du Nord), as well as the turret and roofs. Its present state combines medieval traces, such as crows and window frames, with subsequent modifications, reflecting its evolution over the centuries.
Located in the Allier department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, this house is located in an urban context marked by the presence of the court of the Dukes of Bourbon in the 15th century. Cusset, then a prosperous city, housed a merchant bourgeoisie and artisans whose homes, like this one, still testify today. The protection of 1928 underscores its heritage importance, linked to its association with Louis XI's house and its distinctive architectural features.
