Origin and history
The Maison Art Nouveau of 46 Rue Saint-Marc in Orléans, built in the 1st quarter of the 20th century, is distinguished by its asymmetrical facade and its eclectic mixture of materials: mill for trimming, brick for the skylight, cut stone for ornaments, and slates for the roof. The architecture breaks with classical symmetries by offering three irregular spans, where each bay is unique. The left window of the first level even takes up a famous motif of Hector Guimard (Castel Béranger), while the windows' woods adopt japonizing curves, absent on the upper floor.
The exterior decorations combine natural and fantastic symbols: thistle returns in leitmotiv, accompanied by a mermaid mask emerging from seaweeds, surrounded by stalactites and stylized water fillets that evoke waves. These elements, combined with volute aislers supporting the gutter, reinforce the dynamic and organic effect dear to Art Nouveau. The curved roof, pierced by an oculus, and contrasts of textures (smooth stone, rough brick) complete to make this facade a total work, where handicrafts are used for revolutionary aesthetics.
Ranked a Historic Monument since 14 September 1994 (protection of facades and roofs), the house is attributed to the entrepreneur Barillet, whose name is one of the few traces of the craftsmen who worked on this project. Its state of conservation and its location in the city centre (address confirmed by the Mérimée base) make it a rare testimony of Art Nouveau in the region Centre-Val de Loire, often associated with more Parisian achievements. The accuracy of its GPS location is considered satisfactory (note 6/10), and its illustration is licensed under Creative Commons.
The building embodies the architectural experiments of its time, where ornamentation becomes a language in its own right. Unlike the industrial or public buildings of Art Nouveau, this bourgeois house illustrates how this movement penetrated private habitat, transforming functional elements (balcony, windows) into artistic expression supports. Its inscription in the title of Historic Monuments underscores its heritage value, both for its aesthetic audacity and for its anchoring in the urban history of Orleans.
