Origin and history

The house located at 14 rue de Verdun in Sarre-Union is an emblematic building of local heritage. Built in the first half of the 18th century, it is representative of the Alsatian civil architecture of that time. Its inscription as a historical monument in 1934 bears witness to its cultural and architectural importance, particularly for its decorative elements such as lion-headed consoles.

According to oral sources, this house was built in 1740 to serve as a residence and pharmacy. The ground floor was originally designed for this activity, making it a rare example of a mixed-use building (residential and commercial) in the region. The inner courtyard, with its corbellations, adds to its historical and functional character.

The elements protected by the 1934 decree include the street door, the support of the adjacent bay with its carved consoles, and the side door. These artistic details reflect the know-how of local 18th century artisans. Although the precise location is estimated as poor (level 5/10), the official address remains the 14 rue de Verdun in Saar-Union, in the department of Lower Rhine.
