Origin and history
The house at 6 rue de la Grande-Boucherie in Séletat is a building built during the 2nd quarter of the 18th century. This building, representative of the Alsatian civil architecture of that time, is distinguished by decorative and structural elements characteristic of its time. His inscription as a historic monument in 1934 underscores his heritage value, particularly for his gate on street, including vantals and impostes, protected by ministerial decree.
Sélestat, the town of Bas-Rhin in the Grand Est region, was at this time an important commercial and cultural crossroads in Alsace. Bourgeois houses like this reflected the prosperity of local merchants and artisans, often linked to trade corporations. The town planning of the period, marked by narrow facades and careful decorations, aimed to affirm the social status of their owners in a hierarchical society.
The inscription of the house in 1934 is part of a broader desire to preserve the Alsatian heritage, then threatened by the urban transformations and conflicts of the twentieth century. The protection concerns only the entrance door, an architectural element considered remarkable, while the rest of the building retains its residential use. Today, this monument reflects the know-how of 18th-century artisans and the evolution of the building in Sélestat.
