Origin and history
The house at 61 rue du Général-Gouraud is an emblematic building of the first half of the seventeenth century, located in the Alsatian city of Obernai. This building is distinguished by its facade with finely cut and carved wooden panels, typical of the civil architecture of this period in Alsace. Originally, it housed an addiction dedicated to the work of skins, whose facade gave on a canal today covered. A covered bridge, still visible, linked this dependence to the main dwelling on the first floor, illustrating the integration of craft activities into the urban fabric.
Classified as a historic monument since 1930, this house reflects the economic importance of leather trades in the region. Its inscription specifically concerns facades and roofs, recognized for their heritage value. The historic address, initially 57 rue Clémenceau, evolved to 61 rue du Général-Gouraud, reflecting the urban transformations of Obernai. The building, although protected, does not have detailed public information on its current accessibility (visits, accommodation or services).
Obernai, the preserved medieval town of Bas-Rhin, was an artisanal and commercial centre active in the seventeenth century. Half-timbered houses, like this one, often served as a place of life and work for local artisans. The adjacent canal, now covered, played a key role in water-related activities, such as tanning skins. This architectural heritage thus reflects the socio-economic organization of pre-industrial Alsace, where manual trades structured daily life.
