Façades and roofs on street and on site: inscription by decree of 5 April 1948
Origin and history
The house in Alet-les-Bains is a historic monument dating from the 16th century. It consists of two adjoining houses, developed on two floors above a ground floor. The architecture is distinguished by a very marked corbellation on the first floor, particularly visible from the street, while it is less pronounced on the square side. The second floor follows the aplomb of the first, except at the ends of the facades overlooking the street, where structural peculiarities remain.
The inside beams of the house, still visible, have simple mouldings highlighting the angles. Under the floor, fibrous bed joints, partially decorated with stencils, form regular geometric patterns between the beams. These elements bear witness to construction techniques and decoration typical of the Renaissance. Two original wooden windows are kept on Cadene Street, adding to the authenticity of the building.
The facades and roofs, both on the street and on the square, were included in the inventory of Historical Monuments by order of 5 April 1948. This building illustrates the evolution of urban habitat in southern France during the Renaissance, mixing functionality and discreet ornaments. The exact address, according to the Merimée base, is located at Grande-Place and on Rue Cadène, in the department of Aude.
The location of this monument, noted as "passable" (note 5/10) in available sources, suggests an approximation in current GPS coordinates. The associated photographs, under Creative Commons license, nevertheless allow us to understand its integration into the urban fabric of Alet-les-Bains. No information is provided on its accessibility to the public, whether it be visits, room rental or accommodation.
The sources also mention the Insee code of the municipality (11008), confirming its connection to Aude and the former Languedoc-Roussillon region, which is now integrated into Occitanie. The monument, although protected, is not specifically mentioned as to its contemporary use or specific historical events related to it.
