The three wrought iron balconies: inscription by decree of 10 April 1948
Origin and history
The house located on Rue Frédéric-Mistral in Carcassonne, dating mainly from the 18th century, presents older architectural elements, such as a two-folded staircase and an entrance door with curved frames with crossettes, suggesting a partial origin in the 17th century. These details, typical of classical architecture, indicate progressive construction or redevelopment. The north facades once gave onto a large garden with terrace, now disappeared since the opening of the street in 1925.
The three balconies on the first floor, identical and decorated with corrugated wrought iron grids, are the most remarkable elements of the monument. Their motifs include opposite crescents in square iron and a central sheet foliage, reflecting the artisanal know-how of the time. These balconies, as well as the frame of the front door, are the only significant vestiges of the original interior distribution, now disappeared. Their style suggests an influence of local metalworking techniques.
Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 10 April 1948, the house is specifically protected for its wrought iron balconies. These decorative elements, combined with the structure of the staircase and the mouldings of the door, illustrate a transition between the 17th and 18th century styles. The building, although partially modified by modern urbanization (opening of the street in 1925), retains tangible traces of Carcassonne's affluent domestic architecture under the Ancien Régime.
