Complete staircase with wrought iron ramp: inscription by decree of 13 April 1948

Origin and history

The house in Carcassonne, dating from the 17th century, is an example of civil architecture of this period. It was probably rebuilt or embellished between 1639 and 1668, with a later modernized facade. Its heritage interest lies in its internal staircase, of square plan, which surrounds a central cage. The arches supporting the crawling silts are drawn without balèvres, while the transverse arches and those of the bearings adopt a style in full hang. Architectural details, such as the ground impostes of the pillars, reflect a meticulous craftsmanship.

The staircase, an element protected since 1948, is distinguished by its wrought iron ramp, composed of flat vertical irons alternately straight and wavy, embellished with spiral volutes. The handrail follows a gentle slope, emphasized by the undulation of the spirals of the remplage. This staircase opens onto a second courtyard, illustrating the typical spatial organization of bourgeois mansions of the time. The accuracy of its location remains poor (level 5/10), but its official address is 5 rue Pinel, in the historic centre of Carcassonne.

The house bears witness to the urban and architectural transformations of Carcassonne in the 17th century, a period marked by economic and artistic renewal in Languedoc. The details of its ironwork and masonry reveal the influence of emerging classical styles, while retaining traditional local elements. Its classification as Historic Monument underlines its importance in the built heritage of the Occitan region.
