Origin and history

This house in Castelnaudary, Aude, is a typical example of 18th-century civil architecture. It is distinguished by its two-storey façade on the ground floor, decorated with three windows with wrought iron balconies in the Louis XV style. These decorative elements, inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 10 April 1948, illustrate the know-how of the artisans of the period, with symmetrical patterns, volutes and stylized flowers.

The balconies have a refined decor: a central floret framed by volutes, a double frame intertwined by diagonal irons, and an axis of symmetry marked by opposite loops. The trilobed floral motif, with its redentated lateral petals and its central petal formed by volutes, reflects the rock aesthetic characteristic of the reign of Louis XV. These artistic details underline the social status of the owners of the time, probably from the bourgeoisie or local aristocracy.

The precise address of the house, 20 Grande-Rue in Castelnaudary, is referenced in the Mérimée base under the code Insee 11076, attached to the department of Aude and to the Occitanie region (formerly Languedoc-Roussillon). Although the GPS location is approximate (level of accuracy estimated at 5/10), this monument remains a notable architectural testimony of the Castelnaudarian heritage, open to observation from the public road.
