Origin and history
This house in Narbonne, listed as a Historic Monument, occupies part of the former Gallo-Roman Capitol. Fragments of Gallo-Roman mosaics were discovered in his cellars, attesting to his deep historical anchor. The owners, often consuls of Narbonne or receivers of the sizes of the diocese, have been documented since the seventeenth century. The building, structured around two courtyards, features a main entrance on Rue Louis-Blanc and a communication with Rue du Puits via a covered passage.
The entrance gate, decorated with a low arch and a console key, leads to a vestibule of the late 19th century giving access to a remarkable staircase. This two-flyed staircase, with superimposed silts supported by curved columns, is decorated with acantha-leafed capitals and arches in the middle of the circle with prominent keys. Subsequent transformations preserved this staircase, as well as a corner tube and the remains of a polygonal turret, now reduced to its base. The protected elements (stairs, trunk, gate) were inscribed by order of 10 September 1947.
The interior architecture reveals traces of successive modifications, such as the kitchen door decorated with a sculpted head re-used around 1880. The passage towards the second courtyard, framed by a door in the middle of a curved hanger, leads to an annex house formerly integrated into the whole. Although partially redesigned, the building illustrates the evolution of the urban houses of Narbonnais, mixing ancient heritage, medieval structures and 18th and 19th century amenities.
