Origin and history
The Baillus House is part of a remarkable architectural ensemble of Mirepoix, known as the Cutlery. These covered gallery houses, typical of medieval and post-medieval urbanism, form a semi-public sheltered space, characteristic of the shopping towns of the South-West. Their wooden and stone structure reflects local construction techniques, adapted to the commercial and social needs of the time.
Ranked among the Historical Monuments by order of June 25, 1929, the covered gallery of the Baillus House illustrates the heritage importance of these buildings. In Mirepoix, as in other Occitan cities, these spaces served both as places of commerce, as a safe passage from the weather, and as a symbol of urban prosperity. Their preservation reflects the desire to preserve an architectural heritage linked to the economic and social history of the region.
