Façade of the house including the carpentry and the entrance door, as well as the corresponding roof cover (see E 857): inscription by order of 14 October 1963

Origin and history

The house at 44 rue d'Aube in Bar-sur-Aube is a 16th-century building, typical of the civil architecture of this period. It is distinguished by its facade and carpentry, as well as by its roofing slope, which were inscribed as a Historical Monument by order of 14 October 1963. These protected elements reflect the craftsmanship and decorative styles in the Renaissance in Champagne-Ardenne.

In the 16th century, Bar-sur-Aube was a dynamic city integrated into the Duchy of Champagne, a region marked by a flourishing trade, especially around fairs and wine. The bourgeois houses, like this one, bear witness to the prosperity of some inhabitants, often merchants or artisans. Their architecture, combining functionality and ornaments, also illustrates the evolution of urban lifestyles during this pivotal period between the Middle Ages and modern times.
