Gate to street (including sideways): inscription by order of 21 April 1934
Origin and history
The house at 29 rue du Couvent in Sarre-Union is a historical monument built in the 17th century. This civilian building, typical of the Alsatian architecture of the time, is distinguished by its street gate, including the vantals, which motivated its inscription as historical monuments. The Registration Order, dated April 21, 1934, highlights the heritage value of this specific architectural element, reflecting the artisanal know-how and decorative styles in vogue in the region at that time.
Sarre-Union, located in the department of Bas-Rhin in Alsace (now the Grand East region), was in modern times a city marked by its border history and its cultural exchanges between French and Germanic influences. Bourgeois or artisanal houses, such as the one on Rue du Couvent, played a central role in urban life, serving both as a place of residence, a workshop or a trade. Their preservation today offers a material testimony of the lifestyles and architectural evolution of Alsace under the Old Regime.
The inscription of 1934 is part of a broader approach to the protection of the Alsatian heritage, initiated at the beginning of the twentieth century to safeguard buildings threatened by urban transformations or conflicts. Although the available sources do not detail the owners or craftsmen who contributed to its construction, the house embodies the local vernacular heritage. Its exact address, confirmed by the Merimée and Monumentum bases, as well as its approximate GPS location, make it a point of interest for studies on ancient habitat in Alsace Bossue.
