Origin and history

The house at 9 Grand-Rue in Sarre-Union has been a historic monument since 1934. This civil building, dated the 3rd quarter of the 16th century, bears witness to the Alsatian residential architecture of the Renaissance. Its most remarkable element is a door on court, decorated with an engraved date (1560), which motivated its classification.

Sarre-Union, located in the department of Bas-Rhin in the Greater East region, was at that time a city marked by trade and crafts. The bourgeois houses like this reflected the prosperity of their owners, often merchants or local notables. These buildings played a central role in urban life, serving as both a dwelling, a workplace and a symbol of social status.

The designation of historic monuments in 1934 helped preserve this heritage, emphasizing its architectural and historical importance. Today, the house remains a representative example of the built heritage of Alsace Bossue, a border region with a rich and complex cultural past.
