Origin and history
The house at 7 rue des Tanneurs in Sarrewerden is a building dating from the first half of the seventeenth century, with a precise date of 1602 evoked by historical works. It is distinguished by its oriel (projection window) and a triangular box decorated with ironwork motifs, characteristic elements of the Alsatian civil architecture of that time. Although its lateral elevations were subsequently altered, the main façade retains traces of its original state.
Classified as a historic monument since 1934, this house illustrates the built heritage of the Grand East region, specifically the Lower Rhine. Its inscription specifically concerns the facade on street, protected by ministerial decree. The exact location, at the corner of the streets of Tanneurs and Grande-Rue, makes it a landmark in the historical centre of Sarrewerden, a commune marked by its Alsatian heritage.
The building is part of an urban context where half-timbered houses and wrought iron decorations were common, reflecting both the German and French influences of the region. Its present state, partially altered, bears witness to the transformations suffered by the old building, while preserving remarkable elements such as the lodge. No information is available on any owners or craftsmen who have contributed to its construction.
