Door dated 1574: inscription by order of 16 October 1930

Origin and history

The house located on the 5th road from Paris to Saverne is an emblematic building of the Alsatian heritage. Built in the 3rd quarter of the 16th century, it is distinguished by its cochère door dated 1574, an architectural element preserved despite subsequent transformations. This vestige of the 16th century was reused during the reconstruction of the house in the 18th century, after the connection of the suburbs to the road of the Col de Saverne. This redevelopment reflects the urban and road developments in the region under the Former Regime.

Ranked a historical monument by order of October 16, 1930, the house owes its protection to its co-agent door, the only witness of its Renaissance origin. Registration for historic monuments highlights the heritage value of this element, despite subsequent changes. The building thus illustrates the superposition of the epochs, typical of Alsatian architecture, where medieval or renaissant structures are often integrated into more recent constructions.

Located in the Bas-Rhin, this house is part of the historical landscape of Saverne, a city marked by its strategic past at the crossroads between Alsace and Lorraine. Its location on the Paris road demonstrates its role in the commercial and military exchanges of the modern era. Today, it is one of the historical monuments of Saverne, alongside other protected buildings in the department.
