Façade sur rue : inscription by order of 28 July 1937
Origin and history
The house at the 23rd wharf of the Batteliers in Strasbourg is a historical monument built in the 4th quarter of the 17th century. This civil building, typical of the strasbourg architecture of the period, is distinguished by its street façade, the only part protected by the inscription as historical monuments since 28 July 1937. Its location, on the edge of the wharf, reflects the importance of river routes in the urban and economic development of Strasbourg in the modern era.
The building is today owned by the commune of Strasbourg, located in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (former Alsace region). Although the available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) do not specify its current use, its status as a historical monument makes it an architectural witness to local history. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated to be "passable" (note 5/10), with an address officially recorded in the Mérimée database under Insee 67482.
At the time of its construction, Strasbourg, then free city of the Holy Roman Empire, was a major commercial and cultural crossroads in Europe. Bourgeois houses like this often served as residences for merchants or artisans, while participating in the beautification of docks, strategic spaces for trade. Their preservation today offers an overview of urban planning and the lifestyles of local elites under the Old Regime.
