Origin and history

The house at 2, rue des Marchands in Sélestat is a civil building dating from the 4th quarter of the 16th century. It bears the date of 1567 engraved on its structure, as well as a marker visible on the door of the stair turret. Its ground floor, on the street side, underwent subsequent modifications that altered its original appearance, but the main façade, including a characteristic oriel, was preserved.

Classified as a historical monument by decree of 29 April 1931, this house illustrates the Alsatian civil architecture of the Renaissance. The inscription specifically concerns the facade with its oriel, a remarkable architectural element of this period. The building is located in the historic centre of Séletat, a town in the Lower Rhine with a rich medieval and reborn heritage.

At the time of its construction, Seletat was a prosperous city, integrated into the Holy Roman Empire, and known for its commercial and intellectual activity. Bourgeois houses like this reflected the social status of their owners, often merchants or wealthy artisans. Their architecture blended Germanic and French influences, typical of the Alsatian region.

Today, the house of 2, rue des Marchands remains a testimony of that time, although its access and current use (visit, rental, etc.) are not specified in the available sources. Its classification in 1931 underlines its heritage importance in the urban landscape of Sélestat and Bas-Rhin.
