Origin and history
The Hotel Lieutaud is an iconic private hotel in the Mazarin district of Aix-en-Provence, in the Bouches-du-Rhône. Built in the seventeenth century, it illustrates the classical civil architecture of the area, with a facade decorated with carved details and a wrought iron balcony characteristic of the period. Its entrance, surmounted by a lyre and garlands, reflects the artistic influence of the Louis XVI era, although the building itself dates from the previous century.
The entrance door, classified as a historic monument in 1929, has a wrought iron monogram and decorative elements such as lion muffles and carved fruit. These details, combined with the French windows on the noble floor, highlight the hotel's prestige. The balcony, extending over the entire width of the façade, allowed direct access to the main rooms, a typical arrangement of Aixese private hotels.
The hotel Lieutaud is also marked by the story of Joseph Lieutaud, botanist and personal doctor of Louis XVI, born in these walls in 1703. This link with a figure from the Enlightenment adds a historical and scientific dimension to the monument. Today, its protected façade bears witness to both the architectural heritage of Aix-en-Provence and its role in French intellectual history.
