Origin and history
Hotel d'Espagnet is a private hotel located at 6 rue de Littera, in the historic centre of Aix-en-Provence. Built in the 17th century for the family of Spain, it bears witness to the civil architecture of this period, marked by decorative elements such as the wrought iron balcony and mascarons. This building was originally intended for an influential family, the Spaniards, whose members were councillors in the Parliament of Aix, illustrating their high social status in the province.
The cochère door of the hotel, surmounted by a balcony supported by consoles, still bears the trace of an old use as "School of Boys". This partial reallocation reflects the urban and social transformations that Aix-en-Provence has undergone over the centuries. In 1929, the gate and balcony were partially listed as historic monuments, recognizing their heritage value.
The Hotel d'Espagnet is located in an area rich in private hotels, close to other emblematic monuments such as the Hotel de Châteaurenard, the Hotel Boyer de Fonscolombe, or the Cathedral of Saint-Sauveur. This concentration of historic buildings underlines the importance of Aix-en-Provence as a political and cultural centre in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries.
