The well in the courtyard: inscription by order of 12 January 1931

Origin and history

The house in Arles, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, is a historic monument whose protected element is a well located in its courtyard. The well was registered by ministerial decree on 12 January 1931, attesting to its heritage interest. The official address recorded at the Merimée base is 7 rue Balechou, although approximate GPS coordinates suggest a location close to 18 rue des Arènes.

Arles, the emblematic city of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, is rich in architectural heritage dating from different periods. Historical houses, like this one, often reflect the urban and domestic organization of past centuries. Their preservation, even partial as for this well, allows to understand local construction techniques and lifestyles.

In this region, wells played a central role in the water supply and daily life of the inhabitants, especially before the arrival of modern networks.
