Origin and history
Brandin House is a log house built in Noyers-sur-Serein in the Yonne department. It is built on two parallel cellars, one of which is under a portico. The building, dated from the end of the 15th century, presents elevations adorned with sculptures carved in the oak poles of its frame. These sculptures represent artisans, angels, as well as emblems of trades and their patron saints, such as Saint Crepin and Saint Crepinien, the respective patrons of the shoemakers and savetters.
Local tradition combines this house with corporations or companionship, suggesting that it was part of the former Hall of Noyers. At the beginning of the 18th century, alterations changed parts of the building, including the masonry elevation above the porch and the removal of a door window. Despite these transformations, medieval sculptures remain a remarkable testimony to the artisanal activities of the time.
Brandin House was listed as historical monuments by order of 2 March 1927. Its architecture and carved decorations make it a significant example of the Burgundian medieval civil heritage. The details, such as the shield angel or the wood-cut arch, illustrate the economic and social life of Noyers-sur-Serein at the end of the Middle Ages.
