Origin and history

The house of the 16th and 18th of the Rue du Docteur-Degrenne is a building located in Lisieux, Calvados, Normandy. Built in the 18th century, it represents an example of civil architecture of this period in the region. His inscription in the title of Historic Monuments, on 18 February 1948, underscores his heritage interest, particularly for his facades and roof, protected by decree.

Located 300 metres west of St. Peter's Cathedral in Lisieux, this house is located in a historic area of the city. Although the available sources do not detail its original use, its ranking suggests a particular architectural or historical value. Monumentum data indicate that its address has evolved from rue du Bouteiller to rue du Docteur-Degrenne, perhaps reflecting local urban or administrative changes.

Calvados, and more broadly Normandy, experienced a period of relative stability in the 18th century after the disturbances of the previous centuries. Bourgeois or artisanal houses, such as this one, often bear witness to the growing prosperity of regional cities, linked to trade, crafts or administration. Lisieux, an episcopal city since the Middle Ages, retains at this time an important religious and economic role, reinforced by its geographical position between Caen and Rouen.
