Covered gallery: inscription by order of 25 June 1929

Origin and history

The Maison Carretier is a historical monument integrated with the architectural ensemble of the Cutlery, located in the town of Mirepoix, in the Occitanie region. This building is distinguished by its covered gallery, typical of medieval or renaissant buildings intended to house shops and passers-by. The inscription in the Historical Monuments, which took place by decree on 25 June 1929, specifically concerns this gallery, stressing its heritage and architectural importance.

The Cutlery of Mirepoix, of which the Maison Carretier is part, illustrates medieval urban planning and its adaptation to the social and economic needs of the period. These covered galleries often served as market places, protecting merchants and buyers from the weather. Their presence reflects the community and commercial organisation of cities in southern France, where public spaces played a central role in everyday life.

In Mirepoix, as in other cities in the region, these structures reflect a rich urban history, marked by exchanges and collective protection.
